The establishment of a full-fledged University in Jaffna had been a long-standing aspiration of the people of Jaffna. This was fulfilled when a campus of the University of Sri Lanka was established in 1974 by an order made by the Honourable Minister of Education. The campus became an independent and autonomous University bearing the name the University of Jaffna on January 01, 1979.
From a small beginning in the thirty-acre campus of the then Parameswara College premises founded by the veteran philanthropist, Sir Ponnampalam Ramanathan, the University of Jaffna has grown enormously and is today the home of eight faculties with fifty-seven academic departments, several service/academic/support units and centers and a Campus at Vavuniya, about 130 Km from Jaffna. In addition a few more Faculties, Departments and Centres are scheduled for development and will, in time, further open the University’s door to the public and increase its role, responsibilities and commitments to the region around it.
The student population of the university is about seven thousand. This includes about six thousand two hundred internal students in the main campus, about five hundred postgraduate students and about three hundred and fifty of the Vavuniya campus. Although some students are housed in a few halls of residence, the majority of the students find their own non-University accommodation.
It will help to reduce the time lost for processing paper applications, which enable UGC to release cut off marks easily. Safety and security of the online application system is guaranteed by the UGC.
Candidates who have obtained at least “S” Grades in all three approved subjects at G.C.E. (A/L) Examination 2016 can only register for this online system.

The history of Institute of Human Resource Advancement (IHRA), University of Colombo runs into nearly four decades when its predecessor; Institute of Workers Education (IWE) was established in 1975 under the Ordinance No.11 of 1979 which was amended by Ordinance No. 01 of 2006.
The Institute of Human Resource Advancement is one of the institutes of University of Colombo, the oldest university in the country and which falls into top 1000 universities. Institute of Human Resource Advancement was initially started with the purpose of providing facilities for comprehensive higher- level education of accepted quality to all categories of workers enabling them to develop skills, leadership qualities and understand their responsibilities as a workers so that they can make an effective contribution in their workplace and mainly offered Bachelor of Arts (BA) degree until 1983 however, in 1986 IHRA started to offer degree programme namely Bachelor of Labour Education (BLE). The collection of IHRA library consists of about 6000 reference books and 12,000 lending books. Among the Library’s most notable collections are its holdings in Human Resource Management and Service Management.
