There are not many people in Sri Lanka, and possibly the world with the knowledge that Vincent has when it comes to anything nautical. Along with over 30 years diving experience, logging thousands and thousands of dives, he also boasts incredible navigation and boat captain skills knowing hundreds of diving and fishing spots by memory only – no GPS needed. It goes without saying that a master like Vincent is invaluable to the diving operation and is currently well on his way to earning his official Divemaster status to match his impressive record. He is now our primary boat captain, sharing his energy and stories with customers and drivers alike every day, in the place that he can call home from home, at the helm of the boat.

James is a young and enthusiastic British Instructor who began his scuba diving life in the Middle East, building his way through the PADI courses and eventually deciding that the scuba big was too great to stop. After a thorough and in-depth Divemaster course lasting over 6 months, he then made the next logical step in his underwater career by taking the Instructor Development Course and passing the Instructors Exam first time. He then moved to a permanent Instructor and Management role building up a vast experience to add to his in-depth knowledge about diving before travelling to idyllic Thailand to teach diving on a freelance basis on the Islands of Koh Tao and Koh Phangan. After almost a year he then made his way to the shores of Sri Lanka where he is currently enjoying being part of the Sinhala community, learning more about diving in a new area and continuing to transform people’s lives as they take the plunge into diving as the only instructor.

We are a small, Sri Lankan owned and operated dive school based in Unawatuna on the south-western shores of the beautiful island of Sri Lanka. Sumith Wijesena, manager & owner of the Unawatuna Dive Centre is dive certified in Germany and has over 22 years diving experience. Sumith gained valuable experience by setting up and managing another dive center in Unawatuna before branching out and setting up on his own with his talented team of certified divers at the Unawatuna Dive Centre.

Pearl-Divers

The Dive Centre, as it is locally referred to is located at Unawatuna Bay which is considered to be one of the most beautiful beaches in the world. The Dive Center is an only short drive away from the Unesco World Heritage Site, Galle Fort. From Colombo, you can us reach us within a 50 minutes drive through the Southern Highway.

For those who don’t dive, we have lots of other pursuits to keep you occupied and entertained such as snorkeling, kayaking, fishing, boat tours, whale and dolphin watching, jet skis & water skiing. Kids and adults alike will love the glass bottom boat adventure and the turtle safari. If it is all too much you can just relax on one of our sunbeds and watch the sun go down over the temple at Roomasala head.

We have a brand new whale watching boat and can arrange daily private boat rental with your own captain. You can go beach hopping or just sail around and anchor in one of the beautiful bays while you have a picnic and a swim in the warm clear turquoise water of the Indian Ocean.

It should make you feel good to know that 15% of our boat profits go to a local charity “The Dog Care Clinic“ in Mihirpenna, Thalpe. We want you to really enjoy your holidays here in Sri Lanka and would like you to join us on one of the great excursions and dive programs we have to offer.

FAQ

What type of diving do you get in these regions?

We have several popular regions for diving.

Which regions in Sri Lanka can I dive? When is the best to dive there?

Sri Lanka is an island! Which means you can dive almost every where! But we have two major seasons which dictates which side of the island we can dive.

Poseidon Diving Station was started in 1973 by the combined efforts of S.K. Nandasena (Leslie) Sven Holmberg and Bertl Magnusson. Sven and Bertl arrived as tourists in Sri Lanka looking for somewhere to dive. There were no diving centers but Leslie was recommended as an outstanding skin diver to guide them to the best sites. They were so impressed that they invited Leslie to Sweden to train in SCUBA and later joined together to form Poseidon, the first dive shop in Hikkaduwa.

Poseidon-Diving-Station-Boat-Ride

The business grew as more customers returned year after year for the friendly atmosphere and professional diving. Leslie went on to discover the Conch, Arcturus, Earl of Shaftesbury, Alliance, Orestes, and Rangoon wrecks.

In 1998 the centre was registered as a PADI Dive Centre (S-19272) with Chami Sembakuttige as its principal instructor and has since grown but maintained the same friendly and professional reputation.

In 2004 we were recognized by PADI for our achievements, high standards and contribution to community and environment, and became the first PADI Five Star Centre in Sri Lanka. After nearly 40 years of training divers, in 2012 we became Sri Lanka’s first PADI Instructor Development Centre.

FAQ

Do I need travel insurance?

Travel insurance is compulsory for all Intrepid travellers and should be taken out at the time of booking. You must provide proof of your travel insurance on the first day of your trip; you will not be able to join the trip without it.

What is the currency in my destination?

Our Trip Notes include a section on ‘Spending money’. Please refer to this for an idea on budgets. Travellers’ cheques are not common practice anymore so it is a good idea to travel with a credit card and ATM card, or a bank issued ‘cash card’ specifically for travel.

For the best activity it offers, rafting at alongside the retreat is action-packed, adventurous and promises loads of fun for the entire family. The Kelani River, with its grade three rapids, is ideal for both intermediate rafters as well as beginners.

10 eco-lodges have been built on his family estate in the dense forest alongside the River Kelani– set of the famous film ‘Bridge on the River Kwai”. Join fellow guests in watching the film in the comfort of Channa’s 85-year-old ancestral home. Channa runs a 3-day adventure programme (2 nights) packed with bird-watching, mountain biking, pre-historic Beli Lena caves, a day white-water-rafting (fine for age 6+ and non-swimmers). Rafters Retreat is an exciting contrast to the silence of the ancient cities or cultural Kandy City.

The surrounding hill country is teeming with every fruit and vegetable imaginable. Fruit orchards and lowland tea plantations entice you to take a stroll in the early morning. Reward yourself en-route with a fresh mangosteen or wood-apple or stop by at a local farmhouse for buffalo curd and treacle. Adventure, action, and living with nature is key in this Robinson Crusoe hideaway. The owner, Channa, is the epitome of life in the woodland and on the river – safari shorts, braces, a woolly beard and a love of wildlife. Channa is an excellent host, inviting families, single travelers, and adventurous couples into his self-built tree houses.

Service is 100% within the context of eco-projects, welcoming, friendly and with lots of tuition on living with nature – but don’t expect any frills. April to November is the best time to visit Kitulgala to enjoy all the adventure and stunning lush countryside which is only 1½ – 2 hours from Kandy or the airport.
