The central library and faculty libraries situated with accurately 400,000 books, bound periodicals and reports in Arts, Education, Humanities, Law, Management and Commerce, medicine, Pure Science and Social Sciences. The library also adding 5000 to 6000 materials to its stock every year. The library has collected depository status recently from International Monetary Fund for its publications and communications. Excepting Sri Lanka and Rare collections books are feasible on open access for reference and for borrowing purposes.

The books are of Colombo Public Library bought specially on suggestions of the academic staff. The university library also earning very worthy donations from intellectuals and scholars of both local and international repute.



These complete selections included with ready reference materials such as Dictionaries, Encyclopaedias, Yearbooks, Handbooks, Directories, Almanacs etc. and important textbooks, past questions papers and special collections.

How the reading room will be at Colombo Public Library?

The library holds with 600 Seating capacity. The reading tables are sorted by parallel to the book stacks and excluding the Sri Lanka collection of all other collections are on open entry. All the reading rooms are common with all faculties.

How will be the reader service at Colombo Public Library?

All affair are relevant to the registration of students & staff members, limited memberships, delivering and cancellation of library tickets, declaring no claim certifications and different requirements of readers are managed by the reader Services unit. For more information please consult the Senior Assistant Librarian (Reader Services), whose office are situtated at the first floor of the main library.


The University of Colombo library system contained with the Central Library and faculty libraries. The Library, Faculty of Medicine is at Kynsey Road and the Library, Faculty of Science is at Thurstan Road. The Central Library is located in a five storied building between the Law Faculty Building Complex and the Arts Faculty Building Complex. The library consists of books and periodicals in Humanities, Education, Law, Management, and Social Sciences. The main entryway to the library is facing the Reid Avenue.


Books

The library of the Medical College was established in 1870, the same year that the medical faculty was initiated. The library is the second oldest medical library in the continent of Asia. It is housed on the first floor of the administration building of the medical faculty on the Kynsey Road. The seating quantity of the library is more than 160. The medical library is the focal point of the Health Literature Libraries and Information Services Network (HELLIS) and privileged as the WHO depository library in the country.



The Faculty of Science library is on the Ground floor of the modernized physics building which is near to the Dean’s office of the faculty. The library included with Permanent Reference unit, Reference unit, Reading room, Lending section, Periodicals section and the Computer room. This like other leading libraries, this also charging the extra fee when lent books were not returned. The library provided with around the capacity of 150 seatings for readers.

How to register as a member in library?

staff member - To become a staff member, the person must fill an application for registration.
Students - Students were enrolled while the opening time of faculty in a new academic year.
Postgraduate Students - They could register by using ID card of university or library fee's Payment receipt.
Outside Researchers - Foreign researcher will be charged for Rs.500/= and 200/= for local researchers for a month. This Temporary membership can be continued to maximum of three months durations.

What are the fine payment procedures and cost?

Rs 15.00 - Will be charged if reference book has not returned within the due date.
Rs 10.00 - Will be charged if lending books are not returned by due date.
Rs 25.00 - Charged as fine If any student lost their Cloak Room tokens.
The above mentioned fines are made to the Circulation Desk are need to be paid within time duration between 9.30a.m. to 11.30a.m. (Tuesday through Saturday), 1.30p.m. to 6.30p.m. (Sunday and Monday).
